So many people love to hear engagement stories. I admit I’m one of them. But when people ask me about mine, I do find it difficult to tell every single detail so that everything makes sense. The significance of the location, the box the ring was in, the timing of everything…it ends of up being quite long-winded. So like Natalie, I can now just refer everyone to my blog to know the story!
Well, it was at The World that it happened. “The World?” you say. Yes The World. A very significant part of our relationship. It’s a picture/carving of a gigantic world on the side of a building in downtown Salt Lake near Temple Square. This is where he and I walked that first semester…where we finally realized we were on the same page, where we almost held hands for the first time, and where we first said ‘I love you’ face to face. I walked past that World quite often while he was gone on his mission. And every time I couldn’t help but smile a ‘nobody knows what im thinking about’ kinda smile as I walked past, just hoping and praying that things would work out the way I wanted them to.

So in front of The World on Thursday, January 6, 2011 Andrew Dobbins asked me to marry him. He asked me to go for a walk, around midnight of course. We sat down in front of The World to talk for a little while. It was freezing cold, snow all around us. He was helping me with my shoe (LIKE CINDERELLA!), and then next thing I knew he was down on one knee, pulling it out of his pocket and saying “Hillary…..”
And the water works began.
I had a speechless moment…that lasted for about ten minutes. Ten minutes of just hugging him and crying and hugging and coughing (we’re both sick right now) and hugging and crying and smiling smiling smiling. I think I left him hanging a bit too long… but then again the hugging and kissing wasn’t exactly a no. And then finally I pulled back and did say “Oh uh, YES! Of course!”
He then told me that the box is the one that his dad used to propose to his mom. Aaahh an you believe it? Then after some more hugging he said “So how does this work, do I put the ring on your finger or what?!” I held out my wrong hand and he said “Umm..the other one, dear….” Slid it onto my finger and then there it was. So now everything is real…I can really actually look for a dress and start planning something. I can look at the bridal magazines shamelessly. I am so in love and I am so happy! And I am so dang thankful.
